Masahiko Yamamoto was born in 1981 in Takatori, Nara. He is a ceramic artist living in Soni, Nara. In 2003, he studied ceramics at Kyoto Prefectural Ceramics Technical College and trained with Shin Murata in Kyoto. In 2007, he went back to Takatori to create pottery and opened his workshop in Soni in 2017.
Masahiko Yamaoto’s journey begins with meticulous digging, sourcing, and collecting clay from various regions across Japan. He emphasizes that the quality of clay varies from place to place, each with its distinct character and unique qualities. Yamamoto’s process is an iterative one, involving experimentation and a deep understanding of each type of clay. He explores the optimal methods for shaping and firing each clay, utilizing his grandfather’s kerosene kiln as his primary tool. Yamamoto finds joy in the unpredictable outcomes of his firings, sometimes experimenting with adding grass, charcoal, or firewood to enhance the final product.
Masahiko lives in Japanese culture but is inspired by many cultures, especially Southeast Asia, and by the shapes and colors of mountains and rivers. His playful work with clay and varied influences make pieces that, while based on traditional Japanese pottery, are bold and uniquely his own.
