Vintage Sandra Johnstone Abstract Clay Painting c1960s
Incredible and uncommon ceramic wall painting by California ceramicist, Sandra Johnson Johnstone circa 1960s.
8” dia x 1.5”
Johnstone (1936-1991) studied with Peter Voulkos at UC Berkeley in the early 1950s. She was at the forefront of a very pivotal time in ceramics where things started to go from "functional" to more abstract expressionist. Working next to Peter Voulkos and witnessing a new way to approach clay inspired her tremendously, and is very evident in her work. Unfortunately back in the 50's women didn't get the attention that men did and Sandra did not get the recognition she deserved. In addition Johnstone also studied with Paul Soldner. She eventually went on to build her own salt kiln in the early 80s. This piece is from a large collection of Johnstone pieces that have just been unearthed from a former colleague, and is the first time in the market.
Condition is very good, minor edge wear not noticeable.
*Shipping is a flat fee, if shipping is less, a refund will be made after the sale. In some cases a larger more fragile item will require an additional shipping cost, which will be added after the sale.
